Our Humble Beginnings

Serving with Flexibility and Dignity—How Our Pantry Model Evolved Over Time

It began as a quiet response to a profound neighborhood need. In the heart of South Lansing in 2004, a small circle of people set out on a mission to fight food insecurity. What started within the modest walls of church cupboards has blossomed through the decades into a sanctuary of abundance and hope for thousands. Our story began with a box. Today, those boxes have become grocery carts filled with choice, flexibility, and respect because at South Lansing Ministries, dignity is always on the menu.

As our community faced new challenges, our vision evolved and continues. We moved beyond temporary fixes to cultivate sustainable roots. Our food pantry provides dignity and accommodations to those needing our help. The Garden of Grace houses our seeds to our  mission, providing a space for the community to grow produce and provide fresh food to those facing food insecurity.

“Today, our food pantry is grounded in dignity and respect offering neighbors real choice, empowering families to thrive, and encouraging community connection and collaboration as we serve together."

Executive Director Alison Laverdiere
